Let’s be real. Not everyone loves reading. And I blame high school.

The books we were told to read, study and dissect sucked the fun out of reading. Creating this, “I don’t like reading” vibe.

Deadlines and essays have a way of making a book look more like a human torture device than a tangible story.

The moment I realized I liked reading came in college. After years of telling myself I hated it. And it’s because I found the books that made me want to turn the page. Self-help is my jam.

I dare you to try different forms of reading: audio books in the car, reading a paperback, reading on a kindle. If you’re really adimit about not reading, look up and author you want to learn from and see if they have any speaking engagements on YouTube or if they’ve been interviewed on a podcast. These are modern day sparknotes and there’s nothing wrong with using them.

I’ve read a lot of self-help books and here are the ones that have changed my life. Keep an open mind to these books below. Some took me out of my comfort zone, but that’s where all the growth and learning happened. Take what resonates and leave the rest behind.

5 Books that Will Change Your Life

1. Untamed by Glennon Doyle

When I first opened this book, I thought it was fiction because it was so enjoyable to read. Glennon’s storytelling had me binge-reading this book. I connected with her because she deconstructed a lot of limiting beliefs I had had about relationships. While the ladies will connect more with this book, I recommend it to everyone. It gave me the courage to live for myself and not for other people.

Key takeaway for me: If you have a desire, chances are it is your duty to go and get it. Achieve that thing, find that partner you’re longing for. It’s not a coincidence and you’re not asking for too much.

2. A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson

For a long time, I found myself resisting faith. I saw all of the problems the world was experiencing, knew the feeling of judgment and fear that my religious community created growing up, etc. When I was resisting this, I found myself feeling like the weight of the world was on my shoulders. Like I couldn’t depend on anyone other than myself. Alone. This book helped me to feel like I could reconnect with faith and leave the dogma behind. 

Key takeaway for me: You aren’t on this planet to force a relationship to last forever. You’re here to grow and learn from relationships with other people and let them go when they’re no longer serving you.

3. You’re a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero

This book is like a song you want to listen to on repeat. Jen’s voice is one of a friend who is constantly making you belly laugh. I love this book because she talks about how to transform your thoughts around money that are holding you back and making you feel like you could never be rich. The relatable style of this book is so refreshing. It’s not written by somene who is an expert and has always been. It’s written by someone who has struggled with money and dismantles a lot of false things we tend to believe about us and our earning capability.

Key takeaway for me: If you heal your relationship with money with intention and release negative thoughts and stories about money, you’ll allow yourself to earn more of it.

4. The Universe Has Your Back by Gabby Bernstein

Whether you believe in the power of the universe or not, this book makes you feel like you’re always being supported. This book helped me to recognize ways that I could lean on the world around me and not feel so alone and intensely responsible.

Key takeaway for me: You are always supported. Get as present as you possibly can and pay attention to your thoughts to feel the support around you. Lean less on rational thought and more on spiritual connection (whether that’s with the earth, the universe, your inner self, or the angels.) 

5. How to Do The Work by Dr. Nicole LePera

This book is brand new and 100% valuable. It’s as if a book were a counselor. Learning how to heal and how healing your thoughts and past experiences can allow you to transform your life.

Key takeaway for me: I am responsible for healing my trauma and childhood wounds. I have the power to improve my life and change old patters that are no longer serving me.
